Century Uptown Garden

This building is centered around all aspects of healthy living, from physical activity, to good local food, to quality living spaces.  It combines a vertical farm, condominiums and YMCA in Uptown Charlotte.

By combining varied aspects of lifelong health, this building appeals to residents of different ages, socio-economic groups and backgrounds.

These details show how the design capitalizes on wind to maximize natural ventilation and air quality in the residential units.  The model shows the interplay of mixed height spaces, particularly in the greenhouse.

The multistory heights in the greenhouse maximize the plants access to light, but intermediate floor plates allow for access by the staff throughout the height.

Due to this site’s location between the core of uptown Charlotte and a residential area this multiform indoor/outdoor theater with offices above can be a place where those two uses collide and the community will have the opportunity to gather, recreate and mingle.

This neuroscience research institute near Uptown Charlotte includes laboratories, auditorium, library, classrooms, think tanks, administrative space and a farmer’s market around the tree-filled courtyard.

Culinary Arts Knowledge Exchange: CAKE

CAKE is a teaching, research and retail culinary arts center in the NoDa neighborhood in Charlotte, NC.  The spaces include administration, classroom, working bakery, demonstration theater, indoor and outdoor seating and efficiency apartments for visiting artists.

An institution surrounded by disparate neighborhoods and demographics should act as a connector and anchor for the community.  Section and procession can be used to engage the visitor fully with the building and the program.

Research Through Making
Research Through Making

This sculptural piece is a modular, iterative research project examining the spaces created between the compositions as well as the compositions themselves.  It functions as one piece as well as individual shallow reliefs.

This project was funded with a Research through Making Grant from the UNC Charlotte SOA in the spring of 2013.
